Rob Zombie – The Electric Warlock Acid Witch Satanic Orgy Celebration Dispenser

Rob Zombie’s new album may have the words ‘The Electric Warlock Acid Witch Satanic Orgy Celebration Dispenser’ plastered over its 1970s voodoo flashback cover, but it could just as well be called ‘If It Aint Broke, Don’t Fix It Volume 6’. The song titles may have got WAY trippier since last time, but musically we are back in glam metal, schlock horror party town, population one. There is simply no other artist around that sounds quite like Zombie, and whilst that means every new album gets the Ronseal does-what-it-says-on-the-tin seal of approval, it does make it increasingly hard to be blown away. TEWAWSOCD is a good Zombie album, not a great one, but luckily a good Zombie album is still great, so that’s good. Do you follow? Great. Like every Zombie album, this one alternates between crunching, creeping squall and high camp theatrics with a handful of instrumental interludes thrown in for good measure, but while past albums have given the listener time to wander through the flashing neon carnival, absorbing songs into the psyche, the best parts of ‘Warlock’ storm in like a gang of muddy cyber punks from a John Carpenter movie, wrecking up the place and chugging all the beer before disappearing in a cloud of dust and vomit. Excluding six minute closer ‘Wurdalak’, the average song length here is 2:21, compared to ‘Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor’s 3:13, and ‘Hellbilly Deluxe 2’s 3:38. Guitarist John 5 is doing some amazingly intricate and inventive solo stuff at the moment, but this is not the place for intricacy or invention. This is Rob Zombieland, and this is a place to get your boots on, get high, and get fucked (in a UFO if possible).
